Class 85 A subsurface well packer tool substantially of readily drillable material such as cast iron has slips with portions for frictionally engaging the well wall and gripping portions for anchoring the tool to the well wall so that when anchored a rubber packing sleeve is expanded against the well wall at the same time closing a by-pass valve so that fluid may only pass through the drill string which the packer anchors in the well base. The tool has a central body tube 10 which is attached to the drill string B at the top 12 and to a tail pipe 80 at the bottom 13. A sleeve 17, slidable on the tube 10 has slips 19 mounted in grooves 18 (see Fig. 2) and pressed outwards by springs 42, the lower portions 47 frictionally engaging the well wall C. A collar 61 secured to the sleeve 17 is held from axial movement relative to the tube 10 by the engagement of a pin 54 in the horizontal leg 53 of an L slot 51 in the tube 10. Also slidable on the tube 10 is a rubber packing sleeve 25 which is secured to a collar 28 at the top and an expander 20 at the bottom. The collar 28 is prevented from moving upwards and closing by-pass ports 31 in the tube 10 by the heads 62 of bolts 60, shoulders 63 in bores 61 in the sleeve 17. screwed into the expander 20, engaging 'The expander is prevented from downward movement relative to the tube 10 by a shoulder 21 on the tube. To anchor the packer the drill string B is rotated until the pin 54 moves into the vertical leg 52 of the L slot 51. The drill string is then pushed downwards but as the slips 19 frictionally grip the well wall C the sleeve 17 does not move and the tops 23 of the slips hold the expander 20 so that the tube 10 moves down inside the sleeve 25, closing the by-pass ports 31, until a shoulder 12a on. the head 12 engages the sleeve 25 which causes the. expander 20 to force the tops 23 of the slips outwards until their teeth 24 anchor into the well wall C when further downward movement of the drill string B compresses the packing sleeve 24 longitudinally so expanding it against the well wall C (see Fig. 3. not shown). To release the packer 10 the drill string B is moved upwards when the relative movements above are reversed.
