1283181 Wells &c BAKER OIL TOOLS Inc 12 May 1971 [20 July 1970] 14607/71 Heading E1F A well tool comprises a body, normally retracted means on the body, means for expanding the normally retracted means laterally into contact with the wall of the well bore, a coupling releasably securing the body to the expanding means for transferring non-rotary longitudinal movement of the body to the expanding means to expand laterally the normally retracted means, means for retaining the coupling in its coupled position, and means for shifting the retaining means to release the coupling to permit retraction of the normally retracted means. A packer body 10 comprises a tube 11 and head 12. A setting sleeve 14 is initially secured to the head by a screw 15 and is attached to a ring 16 abutting packing 17. A sleeve 19 depends from the ring 16 and has a flange 20 underlying a ring 21 abutting the packing. The ring 21 carries a sleeve 22 supporting an expander 25 from which depend slips 27. The slips 27 supporting a ring 34 in turn supporting slips 37 and an expander 40. The expander 40 carries sleeves 46, 48, 49, 52, the sleeve 52 being releasably coupled to the tube 11 of the body by spring arms 54 on the sleeve 52, engaging a groove 56 in the tube and being held in the groove by a retainer ring 57 fixed to the tube by shear pins 59. The packer is run into the well on a gas operated setting tool C, a sleeve 105 on the tool urging the sleeve 14 downwardly and a tool mandrel 85 pulling the body upwardly. Downward movement of the sleeve 14 is transmitted through packing 17, ring 21 and sleeve 22 to the expander 25 and upward movement of the body is transmitted through the arms 54, and sleeves 52, 49, 48, 46 to the expander 40 to set the slips. Further downward movement of the sleeve 14 acts through the abutment 16 to set the packing. The packing and slips are retained set by ratchet devices 70, 76 respectively. When the setting forces exerted by the tool are large enough, a tool portion 91 ruptures to release the tool from the packer, a tool member 92 falling to permit tool dogs 95 to release from the head 12. A retrieving tool comprises a fitting (not shown) and a mandrel 120 (Fig. 7d) reciprocable in the fitting and slidably carrying spring fingers 133. After the fitting has been latched to the head, and the mandrel has been lowered to the position shown chain dotted, the mandrel is raised to release the packer. A sleeve 123 on the mandrel raises the fingers which lift sleeves 60, 61 on the packer so that keys 62 on the sleeve 61, lift the ring 57, shear the pins 59, and free the arms 54 from the body. The ratchet devices then permit upward movement of the body relative to the packing, slips and expands, and a flange 66 on the body lifts the sleeve 19 to release the packing. Further upward movement of the body causes the flange 20 on the sleeve 19 to lift the ring 21, sleeve 22 and expander 25 to retract the slips 27, 37. Sometimes the slips 37 retract as the arms are freed.
