Abstract

1,219,152. Well packers. CAMCO, Inc. 13 June, 1968 [30 June, 1967], No. 28271/68. Heading E1F. A well packer comprises a mandrel 22, packing seals 18, slips 74, hydraulically operable seal expanding means including a sleeve 56 and a seal setting sleeve 44, and a one-way clutch 53 between sleeve 44 and the mandrel to keep sleeve 44 in position to maintain the seals 18 expanded independently of the slips. To set the packer a plug is inserted in the mandrel beneath the slips, and fluid pressure is applied to the mandrel and chamber 31. Pressure in the chamber first causes pin 68 between the two sleeves to shear and then forces piston 60 and sleeve 56 downwardly to expand the slips. A sleeve 78 is slidably mounfed on the mandrel and has ears 80 extending into slots 82 in the slips 74 to prevent one slip from moving longitudinally with respect to the others. After the slips have been expanded and the pressure in chamber 31 increased, shear pin 70 between seal setting sleeve 44 and a sleeve 36 breaks allowing piston 48 and sleeve 44 to move upwardly to expand the packing seals 18. Clutch 53, which prevents downward movement of sleeve 44 and clutch 66 which prevents upward movement of sleeve 56 relative to sleeve 44, are of the construction described in Specification 1192306. To release the packer, top sub 90 is rotated shearing pin 100 and raising the sub and member 94 until shoulders 102 and 104 on member 94 and sleeve 92 engage whereupon sleeve 92 is also rotated to raise the upper abutment of the packing seals. Further upward movement of sleeve 92 and sleeve 36 connected thereto causes shoulders on sleeve 36 and 44 to engage to raise sleeve 44, and then shoulders on sleeves 44 and 56 to engage to raise sleeve 56 and to release the slips. Bow springs 84 on the slips ensure that the slips are retracted an appreciable distance. Initial rotation of the sub connects the inside of the mandrel to the outside of the sub through port 91. The slip and the packer release assemblies are described . in Specifications 1175033 and 1219153.
