1398038 Wells &c SCHLUMBERGER TECHNOLOGY CORP 25 May 1973 [26 May 1972 (3)] 25175/73 Heading E1F In a well packer having a first one-way lock holding the packing in an expanded condition and a second one-way lock holding slips in an expanded condition, means are provided for disabling the locks to permit retrieval of the apparatus from a well. The packer comprises a mandrel 10 fixed to a nose 17 and slip expander 15, slips 12 slidable on the mandrel, a slip expander 14 slidable on the mandrel, a sleeve 38 joined to the expander 14 by a pin and slot connection 39, 41, an abutment 36 fixed to the sleeve 38, a sleeve 34 slidable on the mandrel and carrying packing 30, an abutment 35 fixed to the sleeve 34, the first and second locks 75, 50 for respectively holding the abutment 35 and the expander 14 against upward movement relative to the mandrel, and a release sleeve 67 for disabling the locks and joined to an extension 65 of the sleeve 34 by a pin and slot connection 70, 71. The packer is run into the well on a gas operated setting tool comprising a sleeve 101 and tension member 100, the packer being set at the required depth by moving the sleeve 101 downwardly and the member 100 upwardly. Downward movement of the sleeve 101 drives the release sleeve 67, the sleeve 34 and the abutment 35 downwardly along the mandrel 10 which is simultaneously pulled upwardly by the member 100, a sleeve 84 carrying the latch 75 also moving downwardly and the expander 14 together with the latch 50 moving downwardly to set and hold the slips. Further downward movement of the sleeves 67, 34 shears pins 44 to permit movement of the abutment 35 to set the packing 30. When the packer is set a tension stud 103 in the member 100 fails, releasing a split ring 107 from the nose 17 so that the setting tool may be withdrawn and production tubing connected to the packer by threads 90. To release the packer the production tubing is removed and a grapple is engaged with threads 88 on the sleeve 67 and pulled upwardly shearing a pin 72 to enable the sleeve 67 to move upwardly relative to the mandrel 10 to free spring fingers 83 formed on the sleeve 84 to release lock 75 and permit the packing to retract. Further upward movement of the sleeve 67 raises the sleeve 34 to engage the abutment 36 and shear pins 45 so that sleeve 38 is moved upwardly relative to the mandrel 10 and expander 14 to free the lock 50 to permit the expander 14 to be pulled upwardly to retract the slips so that the packer may be retrieved intact from the wall.
