Abstract
970,169. Wells &c. BAKER OIL TOOLS Inc. Aug. 21, 1961 [Oct. 28, 1960; Nov. 14, 1960], No. 30070/61. Heading E1F. A tool adapted to be attached to a tubing string E comprises an inner member 10 telescopic within an outer member 19, 21, an annular fluid passage 20 between the members, a valve element 34 on the inner member engageable with a seat 36 on the outer member to control flow through the passage, a piston 39 urged downwardly by the pressure of fluid in the passage, latches 44 in the piston adapted to connect and disconnect the piston and the inner member when the inner member is moved respectively downwardly and upwardly with reference to the outer member, and packing means 57 on the outer member. Figs. 1 and 1a show the tool being lowered into a well casing B, and Figs. 2 and 2a show the tool anchored and packed-off in the casing. The tool is lowered a short distance below its final position in the casing, and the member 10 is then raised, turned to the right, and lowered to free a pin 92 from a groove 100 to disconnect the slips 62 from the member 10. Further downward movement of the member 10 causes the element 34 to close the passage 20 and to move the member 19, 21 downwardly so that the expander 61 opens the slips to prevent them moving downwardly relative to the casing and an abutment 59 compresses the packing 57 against the casing. During downward movement of the member 10 a groove 48 in the member is engaged by the latches 44 and the piston takes up the position shown in Fig. 2 to offset the effect of any pressure in the passage which would tend to move the element from its seat to open the passage. Upward movement of the tool is prevented by grippers 24 which are forced into engagement with the casing by the pressure of fluid in the passage. The tool is released from the casing by elevating the member 10 to release the latches and open the passage to release the grippers. Further elevation of the member 10 retracts the packing, releases the slips which become drag members, and causes the pin to ride over projections so that it engages the groove 100 and the slips are entrained with the rest of the tool.
