Abstract

1447648 Wells &c DRESSER INDUSTRIES INC 19 Nov 1973 [17 Nov 1972] 53677/73 Heading E1F In a well packer comprising a mandrel 10, packing 84 encircling the mandrel, means 94, 96 supporting the packing and fixed to the mandrel, a grip 38 mounted on the mandrel and tiltable into gripping engagement with a well casing, means 50 biassing the grip to the untilted attitude (shown), a central structure 22, 24 mounted for longitudinal movement on the mandrel above the grip, and control structure 62, 64, 74 mounted on the mandrel to bear against the packing and movable longitudinally of the mandrel, a force acting upwardly on the mandrel and a force acting downwardly on the structure 22, 24 tilts the grip into engagement with the casing and expands the packing to engage the casing. The packer is lowered into the casing on a wireline tool (not shown) connected to the top fitting 16. At the setting position the tool applies forces 200, 202 to the packer so that the packer is set after after screws 20 shear, the grip tilting and the packing expanding and being held in the set positions by slips 27, 28. In a modification (Fig. 15 not shown) the mandrel has a shut-off valve and the top fitting is connected to a support and hydraulic fluid supply tube so that the packer may be set by applying hydraulic pressure between the top fitting and the member 22. In a further modification (Fig. 16 not shown) the top fitting is connected to a support tube and is threaded to a modified member 22 having friction bow springs so that the packer may be set by twisting the support tube and after the top fittting and modified member are unthreaded exerting a pull on the tube. A set packer may be removed from the casing by the tool shown in Fig. 13. The tool is lowered through the mandrel and lugs 232 and hooks 236 are aligned with grooves 123 so that the lugs snap into the groove 118 and they hooks engage the lip 120 in a retainer sleeve 108 (Fig. 4). Upward pull on the tool raises the sleeve to free dogs 106 fixing the member 96 to the mandrel and raises the mandrel so that a lug 54 on the mandrel engages and tilts the gripper to release it to permit the packer elements to return to their unset positions for removal.
