Abstract

1,163,642. Wells &c. CHEVRON RESEARCH CO. 8 June, 1967 [13 June, 1966], No. 26615/67. Heading E1F. Apparatus for connecting a guide line 61 to a guide post 33 at an underwater well comprises a pipe string 42 capable of extending from a working platform at the water's surface to the post and including a sleeve 81 adapted to releasably hold a connector for fastening the line to the post. The lower end of the string is propelled by means of a jet nozzle 47 and is guided by a sonar transducer 45 and a television camera 44. Prongs 66 at the lower end of the string are held in contact with the post by the jet, and the string is lowered so that a cone 150 guides the connector onto the post, the connector fixing to the post under downward pressure. On raising the string, spring latches 83 release the connector, a slot in the sleeve and cone permitting the apparatus to be withdrawn laterally of the guide-line and post. A bumper-sub having a jointed bypass for jetting fluid is inserted in the pipe string above the member 85.
