Abstract

1363798 Servicing subaqueous structures WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 11 Dec 1972 [7 Jan 1972] 57002/72 Heading E1H A working unit for servicing subaqueous structures in the form of a column 34 surmounted by a detachable cap 48, comprises a frame 20 carrying propulsion means 52', a pair of arms 30. to embrace the column 34, and drive means including rollers 44 with or without rollers 42 to move the unit upwardly over the surface of the column. When the unit reaches the upper end of the column, gripper pads (50, 52) Figs. 2, 3 (not shown) secure the unit to the column, and a frame 60 pivoted to frame 20 may be tilted to bring a cap 76 into engagement with an aperture in the top of cap 48. Fluid may be passed into the cap via pipes 80, 78, or the cap 76 may grip the cap 48 which is lifted from column 34 as the frame 60 returns to the vertical position. A seat (88) is provided on top of frame 20 to support the cap 48. The various movable parts of the unit are actuated by piston-cylinders 36, 68, 74, 86. The frame 20 encloses a diving chamber 22 or bell. The rollers 44 and 42 may be replaced by crawler-type tracks. The unit may be supported from above by a rope or by the pipe 80, or it may be free.
