Abstract

898,390. Boring earth. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. May 30, 1960 [June 2, 1959], No. 18861/59. Class 85. Pipe racking mechanism comprises a poweroperated transport arm 38 pivoted at 39 near the base of a drilling derrick 10 and having pipe gripping jaws 43 at the outer end, the arm having a vertical position in which it can accept pipe from, or deliver pipe to, the derrick, and a horizontal position in which it can deliver pipe to, or accept pipe from a station associated with storage means 92, 93. The derrick carries hydraulically operated lifts 13, 14 each working over slightly more than half the length of a pipe, and moving together for a short distance for transfer of pipe string load from one lift to the other The upper lift has a pipe joint making and breaking mechanism 16, and a spinner mechanism 19 which is axially adjustable relative the lift to remove a pipe from the string. After the pipe is removed from the string, the spinner is swung to the side, and lowered relative to the lift 13 so that the pipe takes up the position 24<SP>1</SP> to be gripped by the jaws 43. The arm is lowered to the position 38<SP>1</SP> shown in Fig. 2 where the pipe is seized by the gripping mechanism 72 of a racking linkage 61, 67 which deposits the pipe in the storage means. The racking mechanism is operated automatically in sequence with the drilling derrick mechanism, both when pulling a string and when running it in.
