[Also in Division F2] A method of inserting a pipe string 52, including any tool such as a drill bit attached thereto, into an underwater well, from a vessel comprises connecting guide means 64, 65 between the well and vessel, connecting a pair of separable guide arms 60, 61 to the lower end of the string, lowering the string along the guide means, inserting the lower end of the string into the well, and disconnecting the guide arms from the string. The arms are telescopically adjustable within pipes 92, 91 fixed to angles 84, 83 adapted to engage strings of different diameter. The angles are forced into contact with each string by chains 89, 189 each having one end held in notches 122, 123 on locking means 105, 205. The chains are tensioned by tightening nuts 111, 110 to move the locking means along tracks 106, 206, springs 114, 115 maintaining the tension. The other ends of the chains hook over the ends 25, 26 of a bar 86 rotated by a lever 87, the arrangement being that when the lever is held vertically by a latch 88, the chains are held by the ends of the bar. When the lower end of the string enters the well a portion 103 of the well lifts a lever 100 connected to the latch to free the lever 87 and the chains to permit the arms to separate and fall to position shown dotted. In a modification, the latch may be operated from the vessel by a line. The chains may be replaced by cables.
