Abstract

1,208,552. Boring earth. GARDNER-DENVER CO. 7 Jan., 1969 [6 Sept., 1968], No. 960/69. Heading E1F. A drilling rig includes apparatus for holding a drill pipe against rotation comprising a member 62 having a plurality of openings 64, 66, 68, for receiving a plurality of drill pipes, and means 84 movable with respect to member 62 to clamp a pipe in one of the openings. As described a pipe which has been uncoupled from the drill string is clamped in order to uncouple the percussive motor which drives the drill string therefrom. The clamping means 84 has openings 90, 92, 94 spaced slightly further apart than the openings 64, 66, 68 so that the means only clamp the last pipe received in member 62. The member 62 forms a holding member at the top of the drilling rig while another holding member, without the clamping means but with similar openings and with cups to receive the lower end of each drill pipe is 'mounted at the bottom of the rig. A hydraulic motor 76 drives a rod having pinions to engage racks 74 on the two holding members to move the members into and out of alignment with the drill string. Rollers 54 journalled on the rig guide a rail 58 on each holding member as the member is moved. The rig is mounted on a vehicle. In a modification the clamping means may be mounted on the bottom holding means to grip the drill string as the motor is uncoupled preparatorily to a further drill pipe being added to the string. Alternatively the clamping means may be used in uncoupling one drill pipe from: another.
