Abstract

1,238,681. Boring earth. BYRON JACKSON Inc. 15 Nov., 1968 [4 Dec., 1967], No. 54455/ 68. Heading E1F. An oil drilling derrick, which may be mounted on a ship, has a travelling block suspended for vertical movement along the centre line of the derrick, a carriage connected to the travelling block and mounted for movement along a vertical track laterally offset from the centre line, and means-for example a hydraulic cylinder-to move the block laterally towards the carriage and away from the centre line. Two parallel vertically spaced arms are pivoted at one end to the carriage and at the other end to the travelling block. A third parallel arm is pivoted at one end to the carriage and at the other end to a hook suspended from the block so as to keep the hook in alignment with the block. A pipe rack in the derrick is also described.
