Abstract

1303618 Boring earth &c BYRON JACKSON INC 30 April 1971 [27 May 1970] 12517/ 71 Heading E1F 'Derrick apparatus comprises a pipe rack adjacent the derrick for horizontal stands of pipe, a rack inside the derrick for vertical collars apparatus for moving a stand between the pipe rack and a position parallel to the pipe rack and aligned with a line passing through the centre of the derrick, means for moving a stand between the position and a position in which one end of the stand is within the derrick, and a device for moving the lower end of a stand or collar supported by the derrick hoisting means to or from the drill string at the centre of the derrick. Pipe racks PR are located on either side of a line passing through the centre of the derrick D, each rack comprising beams 25 having fingers 60. The apparatus for moving a stand between a pipe rack and the position aligned with the line comprises vertically reciprocated grippers 42 on carriages 36 driven along arms 30 mounted on the beams. The means for moving a stand between the positions comprises a dolly 12 receiving one end of the stand and movable along the centre line, and vertically adjustable rollers 15 .. 17. The device 80 (Fig. 10) for moving the lower end of a stand or collar supported by the travelling block T moves the lower end of the stand between a stop 13 for the dolly and the drill string DS, and comprises a driven carriage 84 carrying a pivoted gripper arm 81 moved by a piston and cylinder 99, 101. Drill collars DC in the rack 105, 106 in the derrick may be moved between the rack and the drill string by the device 80 and a similar device 180 adjacent the top of the rack. In a modification the device comprises an arm reciprocable in its carriage and carrying grippers for pipe and drill collar stands respectively. The apparatus is suitable for sub-aqueous drilling.
