Abstract

[Also in Divisions B8 and F2] In a numerically controlled machine tool production layout in which a transporter 114 is moved along tool magazine and work pallet storage racks 113, 115, a platform 643 on the transporter is raised or lowered to a required alignment with a compartment by means of a plurality of jacks 691, 697, 703 having fixed cylinders and movable rods 690, 696, 702 that engage, by means of sprockets at each end, with a chain 679. The chain 679 has fixed ends 680, 681 and the jacks have different strokes chosen so that by operating one or more of the jacks the strokes are added to move a portion of the chain between fixed sprockets 677, 678 the required amount to raise or lower the platform 643. The shafts 668, 675 carrying the sprockets 677, 678 extend across the transporter and carry further sprocket pairs 662, 661 and 706, 708 around which endless chains 660, 707 run and to which the platform 643 is attached. A further set of sprockets and shafts are arranged behind the above mentioned set to drive another pair of endless chains to which the platform 643 is attached. This further set of shafts and sprockets are driven by a bevel gear drive from shaft 668. A balancing jack for maintaining the platform 643 in its required position may be provided. The Specification also describes means for moving a pallet or tool magazine from or on to the platform 643 to or from the storage rack or to or from a machine tool.
