Abstract
1394201 Boring earth &c INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE 3 May 1972 [3 May 1971] 20587/72 Heading E1F [Also in Division F1] In apparatus for applying a substantially constant tension to an elongated member (a drill string, not shown) connected to an installation subjected to alternating movement (a floating installation 1) and comprising a source 20 of pressurised hydraulic fluid, a jack 14 or 16 connected to the source and pivoted at 15 or 17, a jack 16 or 14 pivoted at 17 or 15 to the installation and connected to the jack 14 or 16 by an articulated joint 18, a guide 19 for the joint, and a pipe 12 connecting the jack 16 or 14 to a jack 11 supporting the member, the jack 14 or 16 is inclined to the guide all positions of the joint. The apparatus is so dimensioned and the source (a hydro-pneumatic accumulator) is so charged that during vertical movement hm of the installation the pressure in the ram 11 keeps a substantially constant tension in the string which is supported by a hook 3. The axis of the jack 16 may be in line with the guide.
