1377485 Constant tension arrangements SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 14 Dec 1971 [16 Dec 1970] 59719/70 Heading B8B [Also in Division E1] An apparatus for maintaining a constant tension in a cable 15 carrying a travelling block 17 supporting a drill string 3 from a drilling rig, on a ship 1 comprises a drum 21 having a cable supporting surface of non-constant radius and to which one end of the cable 15 is secured, the drum 21 being coupled through a rack and pinion or chain and sprocket arrangement 23, 22 to the piston 25 of a ram 26 loaded with gas or liquid at a pre-set pressure. Increase in pressure in the ram 26 due to increasing tension in the cable 15 is compensated for by the cable winding from the drum 21 at increasing radii such that the load exerted on the cable 15 remains substantially constant. The drum of non-constant radius is formed either as a conical screw or a spiral depending on the amount of cable to be wound. The drill string 3 is raised and lowered by a winch 20 acting on the remote end of the cable 15, and the constant tension apparatus coming into use when the string 3 is secured at the sea bed well head by clamping rams 10 of a blow out preventor 8, and sea wave motion varies the tension in the cable 15. A similar constant tension apparatus is applied to a well equipment guide line 32 extending between the ship and sea bed. In the embodiment of Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the non-constant radiused sheave is rotatable with a coaxial circular sheave, from which a cable extends for connection a pair of piston-rods of parallel rams.
