Abstract

1333859 Taking up slack in flexible elements VETCO OFFSHORE INDUSTRIES Inc 11 Aug 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 37616/71 Heading B8B [Also in Division E1 Apparatus for maintaining constant tension in a running string comprises a support 21, a second support 34 connected to a hook H supporting the string, cylinders 13 connected to one support, pistons sliding in the cylinders and having rods 31 connected to the other support, and means to supply liquid at constant pressure to one side of each piston to tension the string. The support 21 is connected to a travelling block E of a floating rig and the string is a drill string. In the event of the string fracturing during drilling the support 34 strikes shock-absorbers 80 mounted on the support 21. The apparatus is rendered inoperative by engaging a plunger (not shown) on the support 21 with an apertured lug 44 on the support 34. A system for supplying liquid at constant pressure to the cylinders includes an accumulator in which the pressure of gas is transferred to the liquid, and is in accordance with Specification 1,333,860.
