Abstract

1278986 Off-shore structures SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 10 Sept 1969 44632/69 Heading E1H A floating structure for well-maintenance operations is generally similar to that disclosed in Specification 1077284 saving that the platform 5 carries winches with means 15 for engaging cables 14 attached to the base 11 of a wellhead 10, and a winding drum 22 for a cable 18. The winches are operated to tension the cables 14 until weights 7 lie between the vessel 4 and pulleys 8 so as to prevent waveaction on the vessel affecting the platform. In a second embodiment, the platform 5 carries a derrick 43 and clamping means 51 for a pipe string 49, the weights 7 being replaced by four hydraulic cylinders 23 and piston-rods 24. Deviation of the platform from the horizontal is sensed by a device 25 connected to a controller 27, which through servo-mechanisms 33, 34 and valves 31, 32 adjusts the pressure in the cylinders accordingly to restore the platform to its former position. Whenthe pipe string is clamped to the platform and secured to the wellhead the tension in the cables 14 may be relaxed. In either of the embodiments the platform may be situated on one of the sides of the vessel 4. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1077284
