Abstract

1,135,273. Offshore structures. VERSCHURE & CO's. SCHEEPSWERF EN MACHINEFABRIEK N.V. 15 Feb., 1966 [17 Feb., 1965], No. 6665/66. Heading E1H. A buoyant offshore-platform, or rig, for drilling into the sea bed 21 comprises a framework 1 provided with vertical posts 5 having horizontally-orientated cylindrical floats 6 fixed thereto and retractable legs 7 therein, arms 9 carrying floats 10 being secured by hinges 8 to said posts, which arms are connected' by cables 15, 18 to rotatable drums 12, 13, respectively, on winches 11, so that they can be raised or lowered as required. In operation, the rig is first moored on site by cables 20 attached to the floats 6, and then the buoyancy of the floats 6 is reduced by pumping water into them until the rig is located at a distance from the sea bed according to the anticipated waveamplitude and the irregularity of the sea bed. Thereafter, the legs 7 are extended until they touch the sea bed while remaining free the move vertically relative to the posts. When the rig is elevated by the crest of a wave, the legs 7 are locked relative to the posts and the cables 18 are allowed to go slack suddenly so that the rig exerts a downward thrust on the legs and is thereby grounded satisfactorily, the arms 9 and floats 10 being subsequently raised by the cables 15 to a position 10' above the water. When the rig is being moved to or from the site, the floats 10 are lowered to an operative 'position and used as stabilisers. At least one horizontally-movable bridge-structure 3 is provided on the upper part of the rig. the or each structure being furnished with a derrick 4.
