Abstract

1463605 Offshore structures CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 15 Nov 1974 [21 Dec 1973] 49618/74 Heading E1H To reduce the stresses caused by wave motion in the main support legs 56 of a jack up platform 50 as they are first grounded or first lifted from the sea bottom at a particular location, the platform 50 has auxiliary semi submersible support legs 57 which are extendable and retractable by jacking and or ballasting and when extended lift the platform hull above the waves and thereby lessen their consequent induced motion. To locate the platform, the legs 56 are lowered to a position above the bottom and the legs 57 are lowered and locked in position prior to deballasting so that they lift the platform above the waves. The legs 56 are then lowered into a bottom engaging position and the legs 57 fully retracted, the platform hull then being jacked up on the legs 56 to its final position. When retracted the legs 57 may be ballasted to increase the platform's weight and facilitate penetration of the legs 56 into the sea bottom. The operation is reversed to remove the platform and if a force greater than that provided by the legs 57 is required to move the legs 56 out of the sea bottom, the platform hull can be lowered on the legs 57 to the water to increase the upward buoyancy forces. The legs 57 may also be used to support the platform in the event of an emergency e.g. failure of one of the main legs 56. The platform may be self propelled.
