Abstract

1,074,199. Floatable drilling rig. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'EQUIPEMENTS POUR LES TRAVAUX MARITIMES. Nov. 26, 1964 [Nov. 29, 1963], No. 48092/64. Heading E1H. An underwater drilling rig comprises a drilling tower 20 carried on a platform 12 which is guided for vertical displacement relative to a permanently submerged hollow shell 10 on hollow columns 11 extending upwardly from the shell and sealed against admission of water, the platform being partly submerged so as to contribute to the floatation of the rig when close to the shell but being above water level during drilling, and means to lock the platform against displacement on said columns. As shown, when the platform has reached its operating position, weights 22 attached to columns 13 are lowered by jacks 14 until stops 13' engage the top of the shell 10. If the operation of the jacks is continued, the stops 13' will depress shell 10 and columns 11 with the corresponding relative raising of platform 12. The shell 10 contains the major part of the effective load and is in communication with the interior of columns 11. Stabilizers constituted by cylinders 21 may be carried by the platform and counter weights consisting of metallic plates 24 and toggle links 25 may be hung from winches 23. The toggle links may be replaced by telescopic elements (not shown) including elastic devices. Also solid counter-weights (24') Fig. 4 (not shown) may be used. The floating platform may be maintained in position by anchors or by motors orientable to permit thrust in appropriate directions.
