Abstract
1,106,258. Floating platform. VICKERS Ltd. 28 July, 1966 [10 Aug., 1965], No. 34262/65. Heading B7A. A floatable vessel comprises an upright column 1 which carries a ballast chamber 2 at the lower end of the column and a buoyant superstructure 3 which is'slidably mounted on the column 1 for movement between a lower position adjacent the ballast chamber and an upper position at the upper end of the column and in such a manner that the column may be completely withdrawn from the superstructure in the downward direction. The vessel is towed to its site with the superstructure 3 at its lower position adjacent the ballast chamber 2. Ballast is added to sink ballast chamber 2 until superstructure 3 floats, column 1 moves down and the superstructure engages the intermediate collar 7 at 71 and is finally locked to the column 1 by mechanism 3<SP>1</SP>. Water ballast is then removed from the ballast chamber to raise the whole vessel so that the superstructure lies at the required height above water line 9. In a second embodiment, the upright column is composed of two telescopic sections.
