Abstract

Large floating structure, e.g. semisubmersible offshore drilling platforms for oil and gas, are assembled in three stages. In the first, the bottom floats carrying hollow columns (infrastructure) and the top platform (superstructture) are built on shore separately. The infrastructure is then floated into deep water and submerged until only the column tops protrude. The superstructure is then floated to the same site. Finally the two are welded together and the ballast is adjusted to raise the superstructure to the desired height. System requires only small shipyards to guild the two structures, avoids expense of erecting the high superstructure on the shore and facilities the assemnbly.
