Abstract

991,247. Offshore structures. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. April 21, 1964, No. 16549/64. Heading E1H. An offshore structure comprises at least three vertically extending stabilizing columns 1, horizontally extending floating members 2 at least part of which interconnect the stabilizing columns near the lower ends thereof, a floatable platform 3 vertically movable with respect to the floating members and supported by vertically extending columns 4 which are at their lower ends connected to the floating members, and a bracing 11 extending in a substantially horizontal plane between the supporting columns and the stabilizing columns. Fig. 3 shows the structure when being floated to its location. The floating members 2 (together with the auxiliary floating members 6 arranged between them as shown in Figs. I and 2) are floating on the water and the platform 3 is in its lowermost position. Fig. 4 shows the structure in a semi-submerged position in deep water, the columns 1 and/or the members 2 (and/or 6) being ballasted and submerged under the water level 5 below the region where wave action occurs. The structure is retained on this location by anchors or is dynamically positioned by propulsion means. In more shallow water the columns 1 and/or the members 2 (and/or 6) are ballasted to rest on the bottom 12 and the platform 3 is raised up the columns 4 above the water level 5.
