Abstract

1,048,775. Offshore floating structures. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. April 12, 1965 [April 13, 1964], No. 15504/65. Heading E1H. A floating platform unit for carrying out offshore operations such as drilling or producing a well, comprises four vertical stabilizing columns 11, 12 each having an annular chamber 17 in open communication through ports 13 with the space outside the stabilizing columns and positioned at a level adjacent and above the water level 25. Buoyant cross-bracing hull members 14, 15, 16 extend laterally between the stabilizing columns and near their lower ends. The annular chamber 17 may be divided for reinforcing purposes into a series of smaller chambers by vertical plates 18 having fluid flow ports 19. The four stabilizing columns 11, 12 are selectively flooded to lower the entire platform in the water and in heavy weather flooding of the annular chambers 17 reduces rolling and pitching of the platform so that drilling may continue.
