Abstract

1,077,738. Floating offshore structures. R. SELIGMAN. Aug. 26, 1964 [Aug. 26, 1963], No. 35020/64. Heading E1H. A floatable structure, e.g. for offshore drilling comprises a platform (1), a plurality of legs (2, 3, 4, 5) pivotally secured to said platform, means for controlling the admission of ballast to said legs whereby the legs may be pivoted downward below the platform, said legs having sufficient buoyancy when ballasted to lift said platform above the surface of the water. Each leg includes two tubular sections (e.g. 12, 13) joined at their outer ends. Section (13) may be pivoted to platform (1) such that in the towed position legs (2 and 3) are parallel whilst in the ballasted position the legs diverge outwardly (Fig. 8 not shown). In this modification braces (8, 9, 10, 11) are removed. A bolting plate (37) secured to section (12) is used to bolt the leg (2) in position. Partitions divide the sections (12, 13) into compartments and valves (64 and 67, 68, 69) control the ballast admitted to compartments (59, 58, 57) in section (13). In Fig. 7 (not shown) pump (82) and valves (79, 80, 81) control the discharge of the ballast from section (13). Additional valves may be added to discharge line (66) of pump (62) to direct ballast water individually to compartments (50, 51, 52) of section (12).
