Abstract

1371147 Floating offshore structures SANTA FE INTERNATIONAL CORP .28 Jan 1972 [3 May 1971] 4204/72 Heading B7M [Also in Division E1] In a semi-submersible vessel, e.g. an oildrilling rig (see Division E1) comprising a working platform supported by a column on a base comprising a pair of hollow hulls 12 provided with stabilizing columns 26, the hulls 12 and columns 26 are divided into a plurality of compartments connected by conduits 75, 76, 78, and valves 108 to pumps 92, 94 to effect ballasting and deballasting using sea water. The pumps have a valve controlled inlet 84 and outlet 86 and for ballasting, inlet valve 88 is opened, outlet valve 90 is shut, valves 100, 102 are opened, valve 110 is shut, and the required valve(s) 108 is/are opened. To deballast, valves 88, 100, and 102 are shut and valves 90 and 110 are opened. Ballast may be transferred between the hulls via conduit 114. When the hulls 12 have free board the C.G. of the vessel is located above its centre of buoyancy, but in the high draft position in Fig. 1 the C.G. is below the C.B.
