Abstract

1527759 Semi-submersible structures MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 11 Dec 1975 50767/75 Heading B7A A semi-submersible structure comprises a prefabricated platform 3 and a sub-assembly having lower hulls 1, columns 2 mounted on the hulls 1, horizontal beams 5 interconnecting opposed columns, and platform braces 4 connected to the columns 2, the platform 3 being positioned in the space between the upper ends of the columns 2 while the subassembly is partially submerged and the space is temporarily increased due to resilient deformmation of the beams 5. The sub-assembly is partially submerged by filling with ballast water, whereafter unballasting of the beams 5 causes them to bend and increase the separation of the upper ends of the columns. Once the platform 3 is positioned in the space reballasting of the beams 5 restraightens them so that the platform is clamped between clamping members 200 on the columns 2. Deballasting of the hulls and columns then takes place whereby the sub-assembly is floated upwardly so that guide members 14 engage the lower surface of the platform. Finally further deballasting enables the structure to rise sufficiently to enable connection of the platform 3 to the columns and braces 4.
