Abstract

1503398 Offshore drilling platforms; boring earth &c. N A NELSON 24 Oct 1975 43927/75 Headings E1F and E1H After an exploratory well has been drilled and a conductor pipe 24 installed, a modular component 32 of a base of an offshore platform is mounted on the conductor 24 and this modular component 32 has a plurality of connecting points 40 so that spacer frames 50 and further modular components 32 may be connected thereto to extend the base of the platform in a direction determined by the results of drilling. Once the base, comprising components 32 and spacer frames 50 has been built the remainder of the support structure and the deck of the platform is built thereon. Each modular component 32 comprises a space frame 38 carrying female coupling points 40 for the reception of male coupling members 58 of a spacer frame 50. After the first modular component 32 has been installed a space frame 50 having a second modular component 32 attached to one end is lowered down on guide wires 48. A second conductor pipe 24 is then installed with the second modular component 32. This process is repeated until the base of the platform is completed whereafter the platforms support structure is may be installed on top of the support structural members onto the base, using guide parts 46. The deck of the platform may be located below or above the water surface. Alternatively a "jack-up" platform may be intsalled on top of the support structure (Fig. 15 not shown).
