Abstract

1310475 Offshore structures ENTREPRISE DE RECHERCHES ET D'ACTIVITES PETROLIERES (ELF) 21 Sept 1971 [21 Sept 1970] 43995/71 Heading E1H A buoyant offshore drilling or production platform 3 is carried on a buoyant upper column 4, in turn mounted through a ball joint 7 on a buoyant lower column 12. The column 12 is mounted either rigidly or through a further ball joint on a non-buoyant base 15 resting on the sea-bed 2. Guide pins 16, 10 provided on the base 15 and on a support 9 at the upper end of the lower column 12 respectively, extend through slots in sockets 8 secured to the lower ends of the columns, to guide them into position on installation, which is effected by the successive controlled lowering, using supporting cables, of base 15, lower column 12 and upper column 4. Hydraulic locking pistons 11, 17 are then activated from the surface to secure the base and columns together.
