Abstract

1422886 Boring earth &c REGAN OFFSHORE INTERNATIONAL INC 3 Dec 1973 [23 July 1973] 55845/73 Heading E1F A marine riser is tensioned by applying the pressure of the drilling mud within the riser to tensioning means to apply a downward pull on the riser. Upper member 32 fixed to the lower end 31 of the riser is telescopic within a lower member 33 fixed to the upper part 34 of the submerged wellhead. The pressure of the drilling mud in the member 33 is conducted through apertures 96, pipes (not shown), a surge chamber 71 formed on the member 33, and tubes 58 to the upper ends of cylinders 45 fixed to the member 33. The mud pressure acts on pistons 46 connected by rods 44 to the member 32 to pull downwardly on the member 32 and tension the riser.
