Abstract

1,009,283. Boring earth, &c. INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE, DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS. Jan. 29, 1964 [Jan. 29, 1963], No. 3868/64. Heading E1F. Submarine core drilling apparatus comprises a base adapted to rest on the marine bed and having a platform 4, vertical guides 6, 7 depending from the platform, and an electric core drill 31 having a plate 33 slidable on the guides. During lowering to the bed the apparatus is supported by a cable 5 attached to pivoted members 21, 22 connected to bolts 26, 27 engaging the platform and a connector 40, the weight of the apparatus causing the bolts to press inwardly to engage a cylinder 30 on the drill to prevent relative movement of the drill. When the base engages the bed the inward pressure of the bolts ceases, and a foot 16 pivots to free a damper piston 34 which is connected by wire 32 to the drill so that the drill sinks gradually into contact with the bed. The apparatus is raised from the bed by pulling the cable 5, the bolts engaging the connector only, the connector raising the drill by means of a cable 41, and the drill engaging a shoulder 45 on the base to raise the base. The ambient water is supplied by a pump 18 to the drill to act as drilling fluid.
