Abstract

1316381 Wells &c INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS 19 April 1971 [25 Feb 1970] 22214/71 Heading E1F [Also in Division F1] Drilling mud of an underwater well head is fed from a duct 25 and acts as an auxiliary fluid which is used to operate a closed hydraulic circuit in which an accumulator 1 discharges liquid to a tank 6 through mechanisms 4a, 4b to operate the same, the liquid being returned to the accumulator 1 under the influence of the drilling mud. If valves 3a, 3b are opened when piston 10 in tank 6 is in its lowered position, then stored fluid flows from accumulator 1 through mechanisms 4a, 4b and one-way valve 7 to tank 6, thus raising piston 10 till it abuts stop 12 in the tank 6. Mechanisms 4a, 4b actuate members of the well-head equipment such as blow-out preventers and valves. When piston 10 abuts stop 12 the pressure in pipe 2 drops till it no longer operates jacks 26, 27 holding valves 20, 23 in the positions shown. Springs 28, 29 urge the valve members so that line 19 is closed and line 22 open. Drilling mud thus flows from duct 25 to line 22 and thus to the space above piston 14 which is urged downwards to move piston 10 through rod 15. Fluid is thus discharged from tank 6 through line 8 back to accumulator 1. When the pressure in line 2 has risen again sufficiently, jacks 26, 27 are operated to open line 19 and close off duct 25 from duct 22. Thus mud is pushed out of tank 10 by piston 14 under the influence of spring 16, mud being discharged through pipe 19 into the surrounding sea. The cycle can then be repeated.
