610,330. Expanding-wheel gearing. DELETAILLE, E. Oct. 9, 1945, No. 26285. Convention .date, March 22, 1943. [Class 80 (ii)] In an expanding-wheel gearing having driving and driven conical pulleys each with one fixed and one movable member, and in which the movable members are oppositely disposed and simultaneously moved in the same direction to vary the speed ratio, by a push-rod midway between the pulley axes, the movable members are engaged by the opposite ends of an operating lever centrally pivoted to the rod. As shown, the movable members 3, 12, Fig. 2, of plain-surfaced pulleys are connected by ballbearing yokes 25, 22 to the lever 31 pivoted to the rod 15. An extension 37 on the lever is pivoted to a swinging link 38 to provide automatic belt tensioning with speed variation. The support 39 of the link 38 is movable perpendicularly to the rod 15 to allow initial belt adjustment. In Fig. 1 (not shown), the extension is dispensed with and the lever is normally clamped relative to the rod by a link which has a screw adjustment for initial belt tensioning. In this form, the pulleys have tread bars sliding in radial undercuts in their surfaces and notched to receive vee or trapezoidal belts. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also (1) gearing in which the movable members of plain-surfaced pulleys are connected to a sliding rod by rigid arms thereon engaging ball-bearing yokes on the members, and (2) gearing as shown in Fig. 1 (Cancelled), in which movable members 3, 12 are connected through ball-bearing yokes 25, 22 to levers 19, 16 pivoted to the gear casing and operated by a rod 15, a turnbuckle 26 providing initial belt adjustment. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
