Variable-speed belt gearing comprises a pair of stepped expansible pulleys of the interpenetrating- cone type operated in unison by means adjustable to allow the belt to be tightened. Each pulley has one part 6 fast to a shaft 4, and one part 7 movable towards and from it, the parts 6 and 7 interpenetrating and being provided with steps 8 upon which the belt 10 rides.
