Abstract

27,100. Mavor & Coulson, and Mavor, H. A.. Dec. 12. Motors, gearing for.-The movable primary and secondary members of an induction motor are connected together mechanically by means of an adjustable belt or friction speed gear, so that the velocity ratio of the two movable elements may be varied. In starting the motor, after one of the elements has attained a suitable speed, the velocity ratio being a maximum, the speed of this element is reduced and that of the other element increased by reducing the velocity ratio,of the variable speedgear. One element a of the motor is connected by an open belt b with a pulley c fixed to an intermediate shaft d. The other element is connected by a crossed belt f with a pulley e upon another shaft d'. The two shafts d, d' are connected together by means of gearing G, which may be adjusted by varying the distance between the pairs of cone pulleys 1, 1 and 2, 2. One of the two shafts d, d' may be directly connected to the one movable element of the motor, and the other shaft connected to the other movable element through toothed gearing. A friction clutch may be introduced between the shaft d and the pulley c, in which case, in starting the motor, the two movable elements may be disconnected by means of the friction gear and, after one of the elements has attained its maximum speed, its speed may be reduced and the speed of the other element increased by first applying the friction gear and then reducing the ratio of the variable-speed gear G. As described in Specification No. 5926, A.D. 1904, the power may be taken from any point of the system.
