Expanding pulleys.-An expanding pulley for motor-cycles &c. consists of a fixed flange 1 with hollow boss 2, and a slidable flange 4 connected to the fixed flange by means of a pin 6 and slot of varying inclination 7. To operate the movable flange manually, an operating-ring 11 is mounted between a shoulder 8 and adjustable collar 12, the width of the ring 11 being preferably less than that of the groove in which it lies. In operation, the ring is moved towards the flange 1, thereby allowing the pull of the belt to rotate the movable flange 4; this sets up further lateral movement on account of the pin-and-slot connexion, and tends still further to raise the gear. The ring 11 is provided with trunnions 16 fitting in the outer ends of levers which are fixed to a vertical rocking shaft.
