Abstract

7579. Cox, J. S. March 29. Variable-speed friction gearing comprises fixed and movable cones 9, 11 with curved contours so as to be capable of a relative rolling motion to vary the velocity-ratio. The cone 11 is secured to a shaft 15, which is mounted in a frame 13, and is connected by a universally-jointed shaft 18 to a driven shaft 6. The frame 13 is connected to an operating-arm 14 by a pivot 12 situated at the centre of curvature of the rolling gear edge of the cone 11. The arm 14, which embraces the gear cones, is pivoted at its lower forked ends to a bar 10 situated at the centre of curvature of the upper contour line of the cone 9. As the arm 14 is operated, the frame 13 is constrained to the proper movement by connecting-links 23 pivoted at fixed points 25, and by fixed guide-rods 26. The bar 10 may be moved upwards to separate the cones by links 20 and a lever 21, which is normally kept thrust down by a spring 22.
