Abstract

241,654. Backman, N. A. W. Aug. 13, 1924. Expanding pulleys. - In expanding-pulley variable-speed gearing for motor vehicles &c., segments 1, supporting one or more belts or ropes, slide in slots in radial spokes 3 of the pulleys and are connected by links 6 to collars 5 sliding on the pulley shafts 11 under the control of levers 9 actuated from a hand-lever or treadle by link-work, screws, &c., or automatically by the machine. The levers 9 rock on curved members 14, adjustable by screws or springs, which members increase the leverage as the inclination of the links 6 to the shafts decreases and may be so shaped as always to keep the belt tension uniform. The levers 9 may be connected with the collars 5 to allow lost motion. A jointed frame 25 is secured to the lever 9 and pivoted to pins 24 on a loose ring 23 screwed to engage an adjustable plug 22 bearing on a spring 21, which bears at its other end on the collar 5. A slot 20 in the lever 9 engages with lateral lost motion a pin 8 in the collar 5.
