Variable-speed gearing.-Expanding belt, rope, and chain pulleys, of the type comprising segments d expanded or contracted by the relative rotation of radially and spirally slotted disks, are adjusted by braking certain elements of epicyclic gearing arranged in connexion with the spirally slotted disks. A bevel-wheel is secured to one of the spirally slotted disks and gears with a wheel g on a shaft h. This shaft has a wheel engaging a worm j on a shaft k supported on a bracket m, the worm shaft carrying a spur-wheel n composed of two wheels of different diameter gearing with a wheel o on the pulley shaft b and a stud wheel on the main casing g ; each wheel gears with a wheel r on the boss of a brake drum s rotatably mounted on the boss of a drum t to which the wheel o is fixed. Brake blocks u, each carried by a lever v, are arranged above and below the drums s, t respectively. The levers are suitably pivoted and their outer ends are coupled by a link, while one is provided with a handle. cord, &c. The second pulley is provided with epicyclic gearing and stationary brake blocks y, the pulley shaft c being journaled in slide blocks a<1> movable in the frame. An increase in diameter of the pulley with movable blocks tightens the belt, pulling the other pulley against the action of springs against one of the blocks y, which operates the epicyclic gearing to adjust the diameter of the second pulley. An internally toothed wheel may be used instead of the bevel-wheel f, the gearing being modified as shown in Fig. 3, or as in Fig. 5. The segments d may be supported at one end only. Jockey pulleys may be employed for taking-up slack. Specification 10,261/10 is referred to.
