Abstract
228,838. Abbott, G. J. Dec. 10, 1923. Expanding wheel gearing; variable-speed toothed gearing. - A transmission member especially for variable-speed gearing comprises a support such as H, Figs. 3 and 5, carrying a series of elements J adapted to move upon the support to form compound gear teeth of variable pitch, the number of elements J in each tooth being capable of variation to suit the dimensions of co-operating recesses in a coacting pulley or gear member. The transmission member may be a flexible band adapted to connect two pulleys A, A<1>, Fig. 1, such pulleys comprising cone flanges with radial recesses E, G into which two or more of the elements J are automatically thrust by the projecting ridges F, D on the other flange. of the pair, to form a compound tooth. The elements J are preferably plates each independently movable in a plane at right angles to that in which the pulley rotates. At intervals upon the flexible support H stops K are fixed to take the power thrust. The support may comprisa one or more. flexible bands, wires, strips of woven wire, or a series of links pivotally interconnected. The transmission member may be a toothed wheel as shown in Fig. 7, the support N being a rigid circular frame movable in its own plane so that the ring of movable elements J is kept in mesh with a fixed gear wheel Q, which has radiad recesses and ridges opposed to one another like the pulleys of Fig. 1.
