Abstract

666,691. Variable-speed friction gearing. EBAUCHES AKT.-GES. July 14, 1948 [July 16, 1947], No. 18972/49. Class 80 (ii). Balls 6 engaging between cups 5, 5' carried by input and output shafts 3, 4 rotate by means of inwardly-directed stub axles about axes 7, which intersect at a common point on the axis of the shafts, in toothed segments 10 rotatably mounted in a stationary cage 12 by means of pins 11 the axes of which .pass through the centre of the balls. The segments 10 are in mesh with a common central rack 19 and one of the pins 11 is extended and geared to a control spindle 18. By turning this spindle, the segments 10 and therewith the balls 6 may be tilted to vary the speed ratio. Contact pressure is provided by springs 22 and camming balls 21. The shafts 3, 4 are. geared to elements 25, 28 of a differential gear, the third element 32 of which forms the final driven shaft. Alternatively, the rack 19 may be extended through shaft 3 or 4 so as to be reciprocable directly for adjusting the gear, Fig. 4 (not shown). According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, two balls only may be used, the two toothed segments gearing directly with each other. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
