Abstract
1,001,981. Drawing machines. SOC. N. SCHLUMBERGER & CIE. Feb. 5, 1963 [Feb. 22, 1962], No. 4607/63. Headings DID and D1N. [Also in Division F2] Drawing, combing and like machines are provided with a change speed gear giving accurate through slight variations in speed ratio between an input and an output shaft and comprising gears 26a-26i fast on an output or input shaft 2 and of the same diameter but having different numbers of teeth which are selectively meshed by a gear 31 which is axially slidable on an input or output shaft 1. A disc 37 is fast with the gear 31 and engages grooves 38 formed between adjacent pairs of the gears 26a-26i to lock the gear 31 in mesh with the selected gear, and to permit change of gear, the shaft 1 is supported in a frame 3 by means of a self-aligning bearing 11 at one end allowing pivotal movement of the shaft 1 and by a bearing 14 at the other end which bearing rests in a cradle 16 pivotally mounted on the frame 3 and resting on a cam 18 having a full diameter portion which urges the cradle and bearing upwardly into engagement with a headpiece 24 and which has a flat permitting shaft 1 to pivot to disengage the disc 37 from a groove 38. The gear 31 is formed with a knob 33 to facilitate adjustments, and a scale 34 may be marked on the shaft 1 to indicate the required position of the gear 31. To change the gear ratios obtainable gear 31 may be replaced by another gear of the same diameter but having a different number of teeth. Fig. 3 shows an embodiment in which the gears 26a-26i are formed on a driving shaft 2 and engage axially slidable gears on three output shafts 1, 1a, 1b. Fig. 5 shows a drawing machine having receiving rolls such as 54 and feed rolls 72 which are driven by a change-speed gear comprising an input shaft 81 for driving drawing bars (not shown) housed in a head 52, the shaft 81 driving the shaft 1 of the change speed gear (which is similar to that shown in Fig. 1) by means of gear pairs 82, 41. The driven shaft 2 has gears 26a-26h thereon having different numbers of teeth which are selectively meshed by an axially slidable gear 31, a second shaft 1a being provided and having an axially slidable gear 31a also meshing the gears 26a-26h. The shaft 2 drives the feed roller 72 through gears 42, 85-87; and the shaft 1a drives the rollers 54 through chain and sprocket gearing.
