Variable - speed gearing comprises epicyclic trains compounded, or a single train in which elements are selectively driven through gear trains of different value from a single driving cone 14, so that a shaft 29 may be .driven at any integral ratio from, say, 1 to 999, where there are two epicyclic trains, as in the arrangement shown. There are three parallel counter-shafts 18, 19, 20 carrying sliding trains 15, 16, 17, respectively, which by means of swinging arms, can be set by hand into mesh with selected steps of the cone 14, which may be driven through a train 21 to get the decimal ratios correct. The shaft 20 drives one side gear 28 of the first train, which is loose on the shaft 29. The shaft 19 drives the loose carrier 12 of the planets of this train. The other loose side gear 7 is thus driven differentially, and drives one side gear 9 of the second train. The shaft 18 drives the carrier 13 of the planets of the second train, the other side gear 23 of which is ultimately driven, and is fast on the shaft 29. As applied to a gear-cutting machine, the shaft 29 drives a shaft 25 at an accurate fractional speed, that speed being readily adjusted by moving the trains 16, 17, 18.
