Abstract

170,108. Carattoli, B. July 12, 1920. Chain gearing, variable-speed, for cycles, comprises two chain-wheels on the crank bracket, loose and adapted to be connected alternatively to the crank bosses B, B<1> by spring plungers D. Chains connect these wheels to free-wheels on the hub. To bring one wheel into action, the plungers of the other are retracted, for which purpose that other wheel is stopped. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a transversely pivoted lever is used to withdraw the plunger D of either wheel. In a modification, levers opening like scissors are used. In the arrangement of Fig. 8, a non-rotary cage is slid axially, acting through bell-crank levers.
