Reel and endless web apparatus ; endless chain and like carriers, apparatus with; actuating.-In advertising apparatus in which a display band is intermittently moved round sprocket wheels 11 the actuating mechanism comprises two oppositely disposed ratchet wheels 12, 13 fixed on the sprocket wheel shaft 10. A spring-controlled pawl 21 lying in a slot 20 in an arm 17 pivoted at 19 to the casing 18 engages the ratchet wheel 12. A spring-controlled pawl 15 on an arm 14 rotating about the shaft 10 engages the ratchet wheel 13, as also does a detent 24. When the arm 14 is raised it contacts with a projection 23 on the arm 17 and lifts the pawl 21 free of the wheel 12. On its retraction by a spring 25 the pawl engages the wheel 13 and turns the wheels 11. The arm 17 falls by gravity or by spring pressure, and the pawl 21 abuts against the next tooth of the wheel 12 to limit the movement of the arm 14 and to position the band. The arm 14 may be raised by a rod 28 reciprocated by the operating levers 26<a> of a note changing machine, or may be actuated automatically by a motor which rotates a cam which rocks a lever carrying at one end a toothed qudarant engaging a pinion mounted on the arm 14.
