Abstract

335,736. Cooper, G. A. Sept. 24, 1929. Moving-map and like indicators for vehicles.-A route indicator or sign for vehicles comprises an endless display band 9 which is traversed by frictional engagement with two endless belts 5, 6. The belts 5, 6 pass round rollers 3 which are geared together and are rotated by hand or mechanically by a road-wheel or other moving part. The band 9 is gripped by the belts 5, 6 during its passage round the lower roller 3, and the pressure of the belts on one another at this part may be increased by a jockey roller 12 adjustable about a point 14 by a lever and quadrant on the outside of the casing 1. The band 9 accumulates in the space between the belts 5, 6 and passes out through a slot 11 in the floor 1a. Bulging of the belts may be restricted by rigid frames 40, and the band 9 may be tensioned by a spring 39. Mechanism for moving the band 9 from a roadwheel 25 is indicated in Fig. 5, the device being mounted on a bracket &c. moving in unison with the steering of the road-wheel. A swash-plate 27 fixed to the wheel 25 reciprocates by its rotation a spring-pressed pawl-carrying member 23 and so advances step-by-step a ratchet-wheel 29 supporting a cam 30. The cam 30 bears on the hump 33a of a pivoted arm 33 connected by a wire 34 to a pivoted pawl engaging a ratchet on the upper roller 3. A spring returns this pawl and keeps the hump 33a against the cam 30. The cam 30 has slots 32 engaging pins 31 fixed to the ratchet wheel 29 to allow of a sharp return of the hump 33<a>. A clutch may be provided to disconnect this drive from the roller 3.
