JOSEPH F. PARKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in box having one open side, closed by the door Apparatus for Printing and Delivering Transfer-Slips; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a ppertains to make and use the same.
Our present invention relates to improvements in apparatus for printing and delivering transfer slips, such as are given from railway cars, busses, or the like.
The invention is intended to provide a'pparatus for printing the name of the street for which the transfer is given, the time at which the transfer is given, and also for printing the conductors number, the name of the street or line issuing the transfer, the month and day of the month, and A. M. or
- P. M., interchangeable according to time of day, and any advertising or descriptive matt'er that it is desired to print on the back of the transfer slip.
The invention consists in certain novel features that will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is bad to the accompanying drawings, in which similar parts are indicated bysimilar reference symbols throughout the several views.
Figure 1 shows a vertical section along the line 11 of- Fig. 3, and looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the apparatus; Fig. 3 shows a section along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and looking" down, parts being shown in elevation; Fig. 4 shows the operating lever and the ratchet wheel operated thereby, with the contiguous parts; Fig. 5 isa detail. showing the thumb wheel for turning the printing roller by hand, with the stop for locking the printing roller in the desired position; Fig. 6 is a detail showing the indicating disk used for indicating the total number of transfers registered and Fig. 7 shows the front of one of the printed slips as turned out from the machine;
Referring especially to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, A represents a casing which is in the form of a A hinged, as at a,-to the body portion of the box. The door is locked in place in any convenient way. We provide a frame hearing the mechanism which is adapted to slide into this box A when the door is open, the said frame comprisin two side plates B and the transverse webs B supporting the plate B, as shown in Fig. 1. Connecting these side plates B are a series. of rods or arbor-s serving as bearings for the various wheels which will be hereinafter described. These rods and arbors serve to stiffen the frame. The spindle C is journaled between the plates B and carries the drum C on which is wound the paper roll C the strip of paper of which is led over theidler C" An endless printing ribbon D is mounted over the feed roller-Fl and over the idlers E, E and E and passes between the plate B, the printing roll F and the printing block H, as shown in Fig. 1. The printing roller F is mounted on the shaft F, which is normally pressed upward by the springs 71. the lower ends of which springs engage in suitable bearings in'the frame B. The periphcry of the printing rol'lerF is provided with a series of flattened faces f, on which is placed raised type indicating the names of the streets, as Ohio, Wis, Utah, etc., as shown in Fig. 3. These represent the junctions at which transfers are issued. The top of the casing is preferably provided with corresponding indicia, as shown at a in Fig. 2. The printlng roller F may be set to print the desired junction either by turning the thumb wheel Ffi see Figs. 2, 3 and 5, which thumb wheel is notched, as at F, to engage the catch 1', which catch serves to hold the printing wheel F in the desired angular position, and yet will permit the same to be turned by hand as already stated; or by means of the rack G which is connected to .the handle G and carries a pointer g, see
Fig.2, which oint-er may be moved to the desired indication of junction shown on the top of the box A. The shaft F projects the heel H of the housing H, which carries the clock mechanism H, the hour and minute hands of which travel over the bottom of a disk above the ribbon D..
These hour and minute hands are'shown in dotted lines in Figs. and 3, as also the name of issuing line, A.M., or P. M., date, and conductors number. carries a rod H, the ends of which engage the springs it mounted in the side plates B on the frame. When the housing H is pressed downward, against the action of the springs h, as will be hereinafter described,
-' it will be obvious that the printing roller F I and the time indicating hands will be pressed l downward against the ribbon D making an I imprint on the paper slip passing between --dow{i;1 of this housing H may be conven- ."iently aceomplished, by means of the operatinglever .I, which is preferably bent out, 'asf'at z, to clear the thumb wheel F and is secured toJ-the'jend of the operating shaft 1, which operating shaft'has secured thereon fan eccentric I and swinging the lever I downward wlll cause the eccentrlc to. cam
down the housing H and operate the printing roller and time indicator as stated. The
i movement .of the operating lever also sets in operation the feed mechanism which will now be described. ThlS feed mechanism comprises a sleeve J, having an arm J, which sleeve is loosely mounted on the shaft I, and is provided with the shoulder 7' so as to permit of the desired amount ,of lost motion'of the shaft I relative to said sleeve before said arm J is rocked. This lost'motion is desirable soas to permit a long swing of the operating lever I and a short angular movement'of the arm J '(t'vhichwould otherwise strike the top of the casing. This arm J is connected by the link J 2 t0 the yoke J v which yoke straddles the ratchet wheel K andcarries a pawl J 4 adapted to engage the teeth of said ratchet wheel. The spring, J
normally under tension, tends to restore the operating lever to the initial position and to feed the ratchet wheel forward one tooth when the operatmg-leveris released. .The.
D will be fed forward also. Mounted on the same shaft K with the ratchet wheel'K is a gear-wheel K which meshes with the pinion M on the same shaft with the gear wheel M which latter meshes with the pinion N on the same "shaft with the secondary printing roller N. The paper strip 0 1s pressed against this secondary printing roller N by feb- ' shaft P are mounted in. slots 6 in the side plates B of the frame.
means of theroller P, whose 'shaft P is pressed downward by the springs P For convenience of assembly, theends of this This secondary printing roller N is inked in any convenient wa as by'ineans of the inking roller Q .mounted on the shaft Q, which shaft is fsai d ribbon and the plate B. The pressing I pressed upward by the springs Q This housing H The ends of this shaft Q for convenience of assembly are preferably mounted in slots 1)" in the plates B of the frame, as shown in Fig. 1. This secondary printing roller X may be provided on its periphery with any suitable type to indicate anyinstructions to be given to the passenger, or any advertising matter, or any other matter which it is desired to print on the back of the transfer slip. It will be noted that the imprint from the roller F and the time indicator H will be on one side of the strip, while the imprint from the roller N will be on the other side, or back of the strip.
In order to indicate the number of transfer slips that are fed from the machine, we provide suitable indicating apparatus, such as shown in detail in Fig. 6, in which K rep resents a disk secured on the end of the shaft K, and which disk is provided with a lug 7.- adapted to engage in the notches r of the indicating wheel R. This indicating wheel R is shown as calibrated to show sixteen operati-ns of the machine for each'notch of thewvheel, so that every time the disk K pushes this wheel R around one notch, sixteen transfer slips will have been given out.
It will be obvious that the parts may be arranged and the apparatus calibrated to any desired series of units. such as the decimal system, or the like. The indicating wheels are so fitted with frictional devices, that they may be set at the zero or starting point.
One object of this invention is to require the conductor to give each passenger a transfer slip when he gets on the car, whether he wishes a transferor not. If he does not wish the transfer he can destroy it, or he may read the advertising matter printed by the wheel N. If the passenger does not desire to use the transfer, iklis simply left blank, no transfer line being t he wishes a transferrat some junction the conductor moves the'lhandle G until the pointer 9 points to the desired junction, which will cause the rack (1 to rotate the printing wheel F to the proper position and then by operating the hand lever I the junction and the time the transfer is given will be both printed. 'hen the operating lever is let go, the spring J 5 will restore the operating lever to the initial position, releasing the eccentric I from engaging with the housing H and permitting the spring It to lift the wheel F and the time indicatorH clear of the ribbon Du At the same time that this spring is restoring the operating lever to the initial position, it is causingthe pawl J to rotate'the ratchet wheel K, one tooth operating the ribbon feed roller E and the secondary printing roller N, thus feeding the ribbon in the desired direction, and also simultaneously feeding the strip forward. The strip projecting from the end of the slot licated. If. however,
printed on one side, and the advertising mat:
ten or other matter, printed by theroller N impressed on the other side.
By requiring theconductor ,to give to each passenger a transfer slip when he pays a cash fare, whether he asks for it or not, the total number of persons entering the carwho pay cash fares would be indicated on the It will be obvious tions might be made in the herein described apparatus, and in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts which could be used Without departing from the spirit of our invention. y
