Abstract

665,491. Fluid-pressure-operated brakes. NEALE, F. May 15, 1950 [May 16, 1949], No. 12934/49. Class 103 (i). In a brake apparatus a manually operated mechanical means for applying some or all of the brakes is adapted on initial application movement to effect operation of fluid pressure power means to apply some or all of the brakes, and is also adapted on further application movement to effect release of said fluid pressure power means so that some or all of the brakes may be solely further operated by said manually operated mechanical means. A hand lever, illustrated diagrammatically at 1, Fig. 1, moves horizontally a cam 20 on a member 16 by means of a bracket 5, a spring-loaded detent 8, rod 6, arm 10, shaft 13, spur-wheel 14 and rack 15, the direction being shown by arrows. A cam 19 on a vertically slidable member 18 operates, through a spring 30 and a lever 22, a fluidpressure regulator such as that shown in Specification 606,410, [Group XXIX]. Operation of the hand lever 1 causes the cam 19 to ride up the cam 20, the fluid pressure in the braking system increasing until the face 25 of cam 19 drops suddenly over the vertical face 26 of cam 20 and releases the fluid pressure brake. Further movement of the hand lever operates the mechanical brake only, the movement being permitted, after engagement of the stop 27 and body 17 of member 18, by disengagement of the detent 8. To prevent operation of the fluidpressure regulator on return of the hand lever to the " off " position, the cam faces 25, 26 are inclined laterally of the member 16 to force the member 18 sideways against a spring (Fig. 3, not shown) thereby allowing passage of the cam 20. The brakes are preferably in accordance with Specification 588,036. It is stated that the mechanical operating means may include hydraulic transmission.
