756,793. Load-lowering devices. SOC. D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION D'APPAREILS DE SECURITE J. R. G. June 10, 1954 [July 6, 1953], No. 17129/54. Class 78 (2). A load-lowering machine of the type including a cablecarrying reel 13 urged back automatically into its woundup position by a spirallywound spring 14 and an automatic braking device operating during the unwinding of the cable from the said winch under load is characterized by the fact that the said braking device includes jaws 22 which are formed with slots which co-operate with pins 19 formed on plate 18 so that centrifugal action urges them into engagement with a brake drum 24 when the plate 18 rotates in a direction corresponding to the unwinding of the cable and such that during the cable rewinding movement the jaws are held against the centrifugal action so that no braking takes place. As shown, the unwinding of the drum winds up spring 14 and also drives plate 18 through sprockets 26 and 17, the plate pivotally carrying jaws 22 by means of pins 19 which pass through elongated slots formed in the jaws, such that when the load descends the jaws move in the slots towards the brake drum 24 to brake the winch drum 13.
